CSG and FNSS Launch Collaborative Venture Showcasing the CFL-120 Karpat Combat Vehicle at IDEB 2026

Strategic Cooperation at IDEB 2026

During the opening of IDEB 2026 in Bratislava, representatives from CSG Group and FNSS Savunma Sistemleri announced a significant partnership aimed at the joint development and manufacturing of advanced armoured platforms tailored for European and global markets. This event also marked the debut of the new CFL-120 Karpat combat platform, a medium tank featuring a powerful 120 mm main gun. This innovative design merges FNSS’s proficiency in tracked armoured vehicles with CSG’s robust industrial capabilities in Slovakia, enhanced by Leonardo’s HITFACT® MkII turret technology.

Focus on Armoured Platforms

The collaboration between CSG and FNSS is set to streamline the production, sales, and continuous advancement of selected armoured platforms and related systems. Initially, the partnership will concentrate on the CFL-120 Karpat, but there are plans to potentially expand the scope to include other products in the future. This initiative aims to utilize CSG’s existing manufacturing capacities and facilitate technology transfer, engage local suppliers, and foster the development of industrial expertise. The cooperation is designed to bolster both companies’ capabilities in meeting the increasing demand for modern tracked armoured vehicles in Europe and beyond.

Introduction of the CFL-120 Karpat Medium Tank

The CFL-120 Karpat medium tank was showcased for the first time at the CSG Group’s exhibition stand, featuring Leonardo’s HITFACT® MkII turret and a high-caliber 120 mm cannon. Depending on customer specifications, it can also be configured with a 105 mm weapon. Engineered for performance akin to main battle tanks, the CFL-120 Karpat offers reduced weight, enhanced tactical mobility, and lower logistical requirements. This design is a response to evolving battlefield needs, prioritizing rapid deployment, effective firepower, crew safety, and operational cost-efficiency.

Equipped with a NATO-standard 120 mm cannon, the HITFACT® MkII turret maximizes crew safety by relegating ammunition storage outside the crew compartment. The turret can be fitted with either a manual or automated loading system, supplemented by a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, with options for an additional 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, or even a 40 mm grenade launcher. This array of armaments ensures formidable versatility on the battlefield.

Key Features of the CFL-120 Karpat

With a combat weight of up to 34 tonnes, a top speed of 70 km/h, and an operational range of about 450 km, the CFL-120 Karpat is powered by a rear-mounted diesel engine paired with a fully automatic transmission. This configuration not only enhances mobility across challenging terrains but also prioritizes crew protection and adaptability. It supports modular add-on armour in compliance with STANAG 4569 standards, ensuring robustness against various threats.

Integrated with advanced day and thermal observation systems, the CFL-120 Karpat is equipped with stabilized commander and gunner sights, a laser rangefinder, and capabilities for hunter-killer and killer-killer operations. The platform’s readiness for modern networked environments allows for the easy integration of battle management, navigation, and communication systems, along with optional active protection mechanisms against contemporary threats such as drones and guided missiles.

The Appeal of Medium Tanks in Modern Warfare

The CFL-120 Karpat is built upon the reliable Kaplan MT chassis, which FNSS previously developed as a next-generation medium tank armed with a 105 mm weapon, currently serving in the Indonesian Army. The Kaplan MT is known for its agility, low profile, favorable power-to-weight ratio, and substantial protection in the medium tank category. The CFL-120 Karpat enhances this foundation by integrating the HITFACT® MkII turret, transitioning it from a traditional support vehicle to a sophisticated platform capable of engaging armoured threats.

Launching during a period where military forces globally are reevaluating their land force configurations, the CFL-120 Karpat presents an opportunity to balance between heavy main battle tanks and mobile support assets while considering acquisition costs. Armed forces are leaning towards medium tanks and fire support vehicles with 120 mm guns to gain impressive firepower without compromising on weight and logistical efficiency.

Beyond European markets, the CFL-120 Karpat also holds promise for allied and non-allied nations looking to modernize their armored units with economically viable solutions for diverse missions. Possible markets include specific countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, where operational mobility, firepower, and resilience under challenging conditions are paramount.
