Fincantieri Takes Charge of Transforming PPA Units into Advanced Combat-Ready Systems

Contractual Integration Signed for the PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship Program

The recent signing of a pivotal agreement marks a significant advancement in upgrading the PPA-class vessels to the Full Combat System configuration. This integration aims to enhance the operational capabilities of these advanced naval platforms.

This important agreement was finalized by the Director of OCCAR-EA and Fulvio Palermo, the Head of Project Management for Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division, representing the Temporary Consortium composed of Fincantieri and Leonardo.

The agreement outlines a comprehensive plan for upgrading PPA-class vessels from the “Light” and “Light Plus” configurations to the “Full Combat System” configuration. It also emphasizes the incorporation of cutting-edge capabilities in the realm of cyber defense. Fincantieri’s portion of the activity is valued at approximately €62 million.

Coordinated by Fincantieri, the upgrade activities will encompass both vessels that have already been delivered as well as those currently in construction and outfitting. This ensures that the entire PPA fleet aligns with the most advanced operational standards.

The PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship program is designed as a highly versatile vessel. Following a “fitted for” approach, it enables the gradual integration of operational capabilities. These ships can undertake a wide array of missions, ranging from patrol and search-and-rescue to combat operations, owing to a scalable combat system that transitions from lighter setups to a complete combat configuration.

Through this initiative, Fincantieri reinforces its commitment to the PPA program, showcasing the Group’s leadership in developing and upgrading sophisticated, technologically advanced naval platforms that meet the evolving operational requirements of the Italian Navy.
