Terma and Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services launch Defence Aviation Services

Terma and Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services (KONGSBERG) have introduced Defence Aviation Services, a new joint venture aimed at enhancing military aviation sustainment capabilities in Denmark while addressing the growing needs of Nordic and allied forces.

The formal launch took place at a reception hosted at the Norwegian Ambassador’s residence in Copenhagen, attended by key representatives from the defense sectors of both Denmark and Norway, along with industry stakeholders.

Oscar Cosman Brøndum, Interim CEO of Defence Aviation Services, emphasized, “The European security landscape necessitates an expansion in aviation sustainment capacity. Through Defence Aviation Services, we can undertake a greater volume of maintenance work, allowing military personnel to focus on operational tasks, while simultaneously building the sovereign capabilities needed by Denmark and its allies.”

Building Sovereign Aviation Sustainment Capacity

Defence Aviation Services combines the strengths of Danish and Norwegian military aviation expertise. Terma offers extensive experience in supporting the Danish Armed Forces, whereas KONGSBERG contributes decades of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) expertise in managing military aircraft fleets within Norway.

KONGSBERG’s proficiency extends to both modern and legacy platforms, encompassing the F-35, P-8, F-16, and various helicopters and aircraft engines, supplemented by comprehensive logistics and training services.

The joint venture aims to provide MRO services for military airborne platforms while developing the necessary personnel, competencies, and industrial capacities to meet increasing sustainment demands.

Defence Aviation Services Objectives

  • Provide MRO services for military airborne platforms
  • Enhance supply security and defense readiness in Denmark and the broader Nordic area
  • Foster a workforce of skilled personnel and long-term sovereignty in industrial competence
  • Establish a basis for intensified Nordic and allied collaboration concerning shared military platforms

Øyvind Kolset, Chair of Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services and Executive Vice President of KONGSBERG, noted, “The inauguration of Defence Aviation Services is grounded in the belief that future defense challenges are best met through allied cooperation and robust national industrial capabilities. Leveraging KONGSBERG’s extensive experience in supporting Norwegian military aviation, we are delighted to collaborate with Terma to fulfill the rising sustainment requirements and bolster defense readiness across the Nordic region.”

From Cooperation to Operational Capacity

The creation of Defence Aviation Services comes at a pivotal time as European nations ramp up their defense investments, with a clear focus on enhancing readiness, ensuring supply security, and sustaining military competencies over time.

This scenario is prompting Denmark and its allies to require not only new military platforms but also adequately skilled personnel and the industrial capacity to maintain and support their systems throughout their operational lifespans.

Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO and President of Terma, stated, “Our vision for Defence Aviation Services extends beyond merely augmenting maintenance capacity. We aspire to establish a long-term Nordic sustainment capability centered around shared military platforms, thereby enhancing supply security and enabling Denmark and its allies to operate more effectively in unison.”

With Defence Aviation Services now operational, the focus is on strengthening its capabilities in Denmark to support military aircraft fleets across the Nordic region and allied nations, thereby translating Danish-Norwegian industrial collaboration into enhanced sustainment capabilities, improved security of supply, and heightened operational availability.
