REDONDO BEACH, Calif. – On October 10, 2026, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) announced the successful launch and deployment of 21 satellites for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL) satellite communications network. The T1TL is a component of the SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), designed to rapidly deploy a constellation of satellites capable of missile detection and tracking, while delivering data globally with minimal latency.

Key features of Northrop Grumman’s T1TL satellites include:

  • Extension of Link 16 — a secure, high-speed military data network — into space, which allows for rapid tactical data delivery directly to the warfighter, crucial during critical moments.
  • Manufactured at Northrop Grumman’s facility dedicated to space programs, boasting 7 million square feet equipped with advanced production systems and AI capabilities.
  • Utilization of in-house expertise and mature commercial products to enhance manufacturing efficiency, affordability, and scalability.

Lou Christen, senior director of proliferated systems at Northrop Grumman, stated, “Our first plane of Transport Layer satellites strengthens the PWSA constellation by adding capacity and diversity of an on-orbit asset, helping SDA accelerate toward global, resilient, instant connectivity for the joint force. We’ve fully embraced the rapid go-to-market strategy and are on contract to deliver approximately 150 innovative satellites for the warfighter, a key capability for an integrated, layered defense system.”

According to T1TL, the satellites will provide secure, resilient, low-latency communications and data transport in low Earth orbit, establishing connections between warfighters and missile-tracking satellites within the PWSA. Additionally, Northrop Grumman is contracted to deliver over 30 space vehicles for SDA’s global missile warning and tracking constellation, further integrating with the Transport Layer to enhance conventional and advanced missile tracking capabilities.

This successful launch represents the first in a series of Tranche 1 deployments by Northrop Grumman, with a subsequent plane of 21 satellites expected to follow. Over the next six months, several dozen additional satellites are slated for launch into low Earth orbit as part of the PWSA initiative. Northrop Grumman aims to produce approximately 150 space vehicles for Tranches 1, 2, and 3, leveraging modern assembly techniques and early investments to meet the increasing demand for enhanced satellite capabilities.

As a leading global aerospace and defense technology firm, Northrop Grumman is committed to providing pioneering solutions that meet the complex needs of its customers, advancing both connectivity and exploration capabilities throughout the universe.
