Hanwha Philly Shipyard selected to build MDA’s MRIVs
Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI) has been awarded a contract to construct the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) new Missile Range Instrumentation Vessels (MRIV). This endeavor, in partnership with TOTE Services, LLC, a prominent maritime services provider, emphasizes the resurgence of the U.S. maritime industrial base, deemed crucial for national security.
The MRIVs are set to replace the aging Pacific Tracker and Pacific Collector, both of which have been in service since the 1960s. This selection aligns with governmental initiatives aimed at revitalizing shipbuilding capabilities across the nation.
Utilizing the established Vessel Construction Management (VCM) model from the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) program, which has already successfully seen the delivery of three ships with two remaining, TOTE Services and HPSI aim to enhance cost efficiency and shipbuilding performance on this critical project.
Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought, officially announced the contract award during the christening of the fourth NSMV vessel, Lone Star State. Vought referred to the new MRIV, named Golden Defender, as a pivotal asset in advancing the Golden Dome missile defense strategy, designed to bolster U.S. defensive capabilities.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy emphasized the importance of these new vessels in enhancing national security through domestic shipbuilding efforts. He recognized both Hanwha Philly and TOTE Services for their commitment to delivering high-quality maritime assets that will support U.S. military objectives.
Michael Coulter, President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, articulated the company’s excitement about building the MRIV, supporting national defense while advancing HPSI’s goal of becoming a premier shipbuilder. The production will take place in Philadelphia, highlighting the city’s historic connection to the U.S. Navy.
David Kim, CEO of HPSI, affirmed the company’s dedication to leveraging proven designs and a skilled workforce, aiming for superior quality and reliability in vessel construction. The collaboration represents a significant step in national defense innovation.
Jeff Dixon, President of TOTE Services, highlighted the VCM model’s effectiveness in reducing acquisition costs by at least 50%, which will facilitate quicker delivery of mission-ready vessels. The first MRIV is projected for delivery in 2030.
This initiative signals a robust and effective partnership among government and industry leaders, with the MRIV representing a major stride in U.S. defense capabilities. HPSI will manufacture the vessels utilizing existing knowledge and infrastructure, significantly benefiting from the lessons learned in the NSMV program.
