Stronger together: Spanish and German Eurofighters secure Baltic skies

A detachment of eight Eurofighters from the 11th Wing of the Spanish Air and Space Force has successfully concluded its deployment at Ämari Air Base in Estonia, where it conducted Air Policing Mission operations from August to November 2023. During this period, the unit accumulated over 800 flying hours, including cooperative patrols with German Eurofighter teams.

At Ämari Air Base, located just 250 km from the Russian border, a regular training scenario was transformed suddenly into a real-world situation. On a Tuesday afternoon, the alarm sounded for an Alpha Scramble, signaling the need for immediate action.

As Lieutenant Carlos Sánchez of the Spanish Air Force explained, “When we receive an Alpha Scramble, we have 15 minutes to take off. The adrenaline kicks in as we gear up and start our engines.” This urgency is palpable among both pilots and ground crew as they prepare for potential engagements.

Once airborne, the pilots can leverage their training and knowledge to pursue unidentified aircraft. In this case, they intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft that had departed Kaliningrad without a transponder, thereby posing a risk to allied airspace. Sánchez noted the importance of having a “tally” on the suspected aircraft, which allows the pilots to describe its type and behavior to ground control for further instructions.

The successful interception of the Il-20 by the Spanish and German Quick Reaction Alert Eurofighters demonstrated the effectiveness of combined operations. “We defend the skies of our allies who may not have that capability,” Sánchez remarked.

The rigorous training journey of a QRA Eurofighter pilot involves extensive preparation—both physical and technical. As Sánchez highlighted, “The life of a fighter pilot is one of constant learning,” thanks to the evolving nature of weapon systems and technology in modern warfare.

In support of NATO’s enhanced forward presence, the Spanish Air and Space Force’s Amber Detachment, which also features Eurofighters, an A400M transport, and over 130 personnel, assumed the lead for the Eastern flank on August 1, 2023. This reinforced Spain’s commitment to bolstering allied defenses following Russia’s aggressions in the region.

The integration among NATO allies was further showcased in joint training exercises held in November 2023 involving eight Spanish and four German Eurofighters. This collaboration allowed personnel from both countries to work as one cohesive unit, sharing maintenance duties and tactical knowledge.

Lieutenant Herrador, a Spanish maintenance officer, expressed the value of these missions, stating, “This is a great opportunity for both Air Forces to learn from each other.” Over ten days, the cooperation manifested in 15 combined flights, with personnel exchanging experiences and technical support. This partnership reflects a larger commitment to NATO objectives, underscored by a camaraderie akin to cherished aspects of military culture—captured succinctly in a classic movie exchange about teamwork and mutual respect.
