Hyderabad, 12 February 2024 – In a significant advancement for the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Airbus Defence and Space Quality Management System (QMS) for the C295 aircraft has secured endorsement from the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA), allowing the production of intricate parts and sub-assemblies within India.
On February 12, 2024, the official certificate was handed over, marking a fruitful collaboration between Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This partnership is set to facilitate the manufacturing of detailed components at various locations across India. The ceremonial presentation took place at the C295 Main Components Assembly facility in Hyderabad, where Sanjay Chawla, Director General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance, presented the certificate to Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, and Masood Hussainy, Head of Aerostructures and Aeroengines at TASL.
Jorge Tamarit Degenhardt, VP – Head of C295 India Programme at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the significance of this certification: “This certification demonstrates the continuing trust and confidence of DGAQA in Airbus quality standards. All detailed parts for the C295 will be manufactured in India under exacting Airbus quality standards. We continue to work in strong partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited to apply a robust and comprehensive quality framework for successful aircraft manufacturing in India for the C295 ‘Make in India’ programme under the policy of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
In September 2021, India formalized its acquisition of 56 Airbus C295 aircraft to modernize the Indian Air Force (IAF) by replacing the legacy AVRO fleet. As per the contractual agreement, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in a ‘fly-away’ condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain. The subsequent 40 aircraft will see production and assembly carried out by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in India, marking a robust industrial partnership. The first C295 aircraft was successfully delivered to the Indian Air Force in September 2023. This new certification contributes to the overarching goal of developing a comprehensive industrial ecosystem that encompasses the complete lifecycle of the aircraft, from detailed parts production to assembly, testing, delivery, and maintenance.
