Saab showcases full-scale uncrewed aircraft concept
At the Jubilee Air Show held at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden, Saab is unveiling a full-scale model of a future uncrewed combat air system, designated A3-001. This concept illustrates the potential evolution of combat air capabilities, where both crewed and uncrewed platforms will work in concert as part of an integrated system.
The uncrewed platform is grounded in Saab’s extensive heritage of aerospace innovation and is designed to complement the Gripen fighter and future crewed combat systems. It is particularly envisioned for high-risk missions, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defenses, and precision strike operations in environments with high contestation. Featuring low observability and a significant level of autonomy, the concept exemplifies a possible component of future combat air capability.
“We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will establish the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems. As part of this work, we aim to test uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics prior to 2030, aligning with Sweden’s future defense considerations,” stated Peter Nilsson, head of business unit Advanced Programs at Saab. “This distinct Saab A3 system represents our vision for what may evolve in the mid-2030s if Sweden opts to build upon our ongoing endeavors. Saab is strategically positioned to spearhead the development of next-generation combat air systems, leveraging the capabilities of Gripen and GlobalEye, alongside our rich experience in advanced aerospace systems.”
The full-scale model is on public display during the Swedish Armed Forces Air Show and embodies a potential uncrewed component within a future system-of-systems approach to air warfare.
