Formation of an industrial network for SATCOMBw 4
In a significant initiative to enhance Germany’s satellite communications capabilities, OHB SE and Rheinmetall AG convened a “SME and Start-up Day,” engaging essential participants from the nation’s space ecosystem to discuss the upcoming SATCOMBw 4 program. Nearly 80 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups showcased their expertise and potential roles within this ambitious project, marking a crucial step towards forming a high-performance industrial network.
The success of SATCOMBw 4 hinges on the establishment of a solid network combining established industrial companies with innovative SMEs and start-ups. OHB and Rheinmetall emphasize the importance of initiating a structured dialogue with innovation partners to tackle current challenges while pinpointing technologies and firms that can support future growth phases.
Marco Fuchs, CEO of OHB SE, highlighted the essence of collaboration in space endeavors, stating, “High-performing space programmes are built on strong partnerships. Today’s exchange is designed to combine the innovative power of SMEs and startups with the experience of established industry players. For SATCOMBw 4, we are laying an early foundation for a resilient, agile, and sovereign industrial network in Germany.”
Echoing this sentiment, Timo Haas, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Digital Systems division, remarked on the rigorous demands SATCOMBw 4 will impose regarding security, integration, availability, and scalability. He noted, “Developing and operating a resilient satellite communications architecture requires not only technological innovation, but also proven expertise in executing complex, mission-critical programmes. OHB and Rheinmetall bring decades of experience in delivering advanced defence and space systems, as well as in effectively integrating mid-sized companies and start-ups into large-scale projects.”
As part of the SATCOMBw 4 initiative, OHB and Rheinmetall have formed the joint venture OHB Rheinmetall Space Networks and have submitted a proposal to the German Federal Ministry of Defence.
