L3Harris Signs Framework to Quadruple THAAD Propulsion Production
MELBOURNE, Fla., July 27, 2026 — L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has entered into a framework agreement with the Department of War and Lockheed Martin aimed at significantly enhancing the production of propulsion systems for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. This multi-year contract will quadruple propulsion production and is part of the Department of War’s Acquisition Transformation Strategy designed to expedite the delivery of essential defense capabilities.
L3Harris is responsible for manufacturing THAAD’s Solid Rocket Boost Motors (SRBMs) and Liquid Divert and Attitude Control Systems (LDACS) for the Missile Defense Agency. Spanning seven years, this contract represents the largest THAAD propulsion award to date for L3Harris, with finalization expected later this year.

THAAD is designed to intercept threats both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere, offering a crucial defense against ballistic missile attacks. As a key asset in the nation’s defense network against short, medium, and intermediate-range missiles, THAAD has maintained a 100% interception success rate in tests since its production commenced.
The company is currently meeting or exceeding contract requirements for LDACS and SRBMs. The THAAD SRBMs are manufactured at facilities in Huntsville, Alabama, and Camden, Arkansas, while LDACS is produced at L3Harris’ site in Los Angeles. LDACS operates as a responsive thruster system that keeps THAAD’s kinetic kill vehicle on course during the later stages of an intercept.
The Department of War’s Munitions Acceleration Council has highlighted multiple key programs, powered by L3Harris propulsion, including THAAD, for capacity expansion.
In response, L3Harris is committed to accelerating the production of critical munitions, investing billions into the expansion of approximately 60 facilities and increasing nearly 1 million square feet of manufacturing and office space at their solid rocket motor production sites across Alabama, Virginia, and Arkansas.
