Open, Connected, Decisive: the L3Harris hC2 Software Suite

The dynamics of the modern battlefield are shifting at an unprecedented rate, outpacing traditional acquisition cycles and compressing the time from decision to consequence. To maintain an edge, allied militaries need software that adapts swiftly to emerging threats.

This is where the hC2™ battle management system from L3Harris shines, offering enhanced tactical and operational decisiveness through rapid and continuous software updates.

Software Moves Faster Than Steel

While hardware can take years to evolve, software can be upgraded overnight. Militaries that capitalize on this advantage can respond quicker than their adversaries. L3Harris provides commercial software designed for continuous evolution, founded on open architectures and validated at scale. The hC2 suite has been deployed as a combat-tested commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solution across over 50 nations.

The Transport Layer Matters

A common operating picture (COP) is only effective if supported by a robust network capable of transmitting its data. L3Harris’ resilient and secure waveforms offer the tactical communications backbone required to relay critical information through contested and disrupted radio-frequency environments.

“With hC2, commanders always have a comprehensive array of communication and situational awareness capabilities available. It’s in the ability to connect radios across the transport layer that hC2 truly demonstrates its strengths,” stated Omar Fernandez, Senior Specialist, Product Management at L3Harris. “The network and the COP are synergistic.”

Yet, transporting data is only part of the challenge. High-volume data traversing a secure network becomes ineffective if warfighters cannot act upon it. The hC2 interface is specifically designed to convert complex, multi-domain information into intuitive displays that can be quickly analyzed and acted upon by personnel at all levels, enhancing the decision-making superiority essential for modern military operations.

Infinite Interoperability Through the Software Development Kit (SDK)

The hC2 suite encompasses over 20 built-in data exchange standards such as Link 16, CoT, and OTH-Gold, facilitating seamless coalition data sharing. Additionally, it features a growing collection of add-ons that enhance hC2’s functionality with sensors and mission tools, including the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) gateway, MCQ Sensor add-on, and NMEA add-on.

“For allied nations and partner-nation developers, the SDK grants access to innumerable integration opportunities, linking national systems, coalition tools, and cutting-edge technologies without necessitating a complete rebuild,” Fernandez added. “This approach eradicates proprietary dead ends and capability silos.”

The flexibility of the hC2 suite encompasses several applications: Command serves as a server-based solution for both fixed and deployable headquarters; Patrol is tailored for vehicle-mounted operations via Windows; and Dismount is an Android application intended for the soldier operating at the tactical edge.

Militaries gearing up for upcoming conflicts recognize the need: to adopt established commercial software, build upon open architectures, and invest in the unified data layer. When coupled with a resilient communications backbone, hC2 delivers these capabilities in the present while designed to advance in response to evolving battlespace challenges.
