Canada Boosts Tactical Training with Leonardo’s Advanced M-346 T Block 20 Jet Trainers

ITPS Canada Expands Training Capabilities with M-346 T Block 20 Aircraft

The addition of M-346 T Block 20 aircraft is set to enhance NATO and Allied tactical fighter pilot training at the International Tactical Training Centre (ITTC) in North Bay, Ontario.

This strategic contract encompasses six M-346 T Block 20 aircraft, with options for an additional six units, aiming for service entry in 2029.

In response to the growing need for modern flight training amidst evolving operational demands, ITPS Canada is incorporating Leonardo’s advanced capabilities and integrated training solutions into its fleet. As air forces globally face sophisticated challenges in combat air technology, the M-346 will play a pivotal role in maintaining effective pilot training.

During a recent signing ceremony in Venegono, Italy, ITPS Executive Chairman Giorgio Clementi confirmed the acquisition of six lead-in jet trainers. He emphasized, “The M-346 represents Italy’s long-standing tradition of producing top-tier jet trainer aircraft. These new trainers will bolster our International Tactical Training Centre in North Bay, Ontario, enabling us to meet the rising demand for advanced tactical training services from over ten international air forces.”

With over 25 years of experience, ITPS has been at the forefront of delivering specialized flight test and military training to more than 29 air forces. This innovative initiative marks a significant step in meeting the operational needs of contemporary air operations.

In October 2025, ITPS CEO Dave Lohse conducted an airborne evaluation of the M-346, affirming the aircraft’s alignment with modern pilot training requirements. “The M-346’s superior capabilities, digital flight control system, and advanced training architecture position it as an ideal platform for the next growth phase at ITTC,” Lohse noted.

As allied air forces strive for improved training capacity and interoperability, the M-346 is poised to welcome pilots from Canada and partner nations into a modern, operational-focused training environment.

Stefano Bortoli, Managing Director of Leonardo Aeronautics Division, praised the M-346’s evolution and market success, stating: “The aircraft is establishing itself as the backbone of advanced integrated training capabilities, serving a growing number of air forces worldwide. ITPS’s selection of the M-346 underscores its commitment to delivering top-notch lead-in fighter training for future pilots.”

The M-346 forms the core of an evolving advanced flight-training system, showcasing proven effectiveness with over 160,000 flight hours logged across more than 160 aircraft sold. The system has empowered air forces in Europe and beyond to train pilots for high-performance fighters, including the Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35.

Currently, 20 nations, including Canada, utilize the M-346 for pilot training or have opted for the aircraft in its multirole light fighter variant. Boasting high performance and agility, the M-346 has also been chosen by the Italian Air Force as the future aircraft for the “Frecce Tricolori,” the national aerobatic team of Italy.
