Thales and Ankaa to deliver multi-mission Air Traffic Surveillance radars for Oman, capable of supporting both civil and military operations

Thales, in conjunction with the Omani prime contractor Ankaa, has secured a contract from the Oman Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of its advanced TRAC Primary Surveillance Radar and two RSM NG Secondary Surveillance Radars.

The delivery of the first radar is slated for 2027, showcasing Thales’ capability to quickly provide sophisticated surveillance systems tailored to meet specific operational needs. This initiative will significantly improve the safety, efficiency, and resilience of Oman’s air traffic surveillance infrastructure. It supports the nation’s air traffic growth aligned with the Vision 2040 modernization framework.

The centerpiece of this project is the TRAC, a multi-mission L-band Primary Surveillance Radar, representing the latest iteration of the TRAC series. This radar facilitates simultaneous support for both civil and military air surveillance and approach control. It can detect a wide range of aircraft, including drones and commercial airliners, and boasts an operational range of up to 300 km, delivering precise, high-resolution 3D air situational awareness while maintaining resilience against interference, including that attributed to windfarm mitigation.

The RSM NG radar complements the TRAC by enhancing aircraft identification and tracking through simultaneous Enhanced Mode S interrogations and backup ADS-B detection. This radar can operate both independently and in tandem with TRAC and adheres to the latest ICAO and EUROCONTROL standards, reinforced by advanced cybersecurity measures. The project encompasses a turnkey solution that includes the design and establishment of complete radar facilities, including a tower, radome, and requisite infrastructure.

Leveraging decades of experience in supporting civil aviation authorities across the region, Thales joins forces with Ankaa, an innovative Omani firm specializing in space technology, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. This collaboration unites Thales’ global expertise with Ankaa’s local knowledge, ensuring a robust domestic presence and ongoing support throughout the radar systems’ lifecycle. The project anticipates generating approximately 40% In-Country Value (ICV) through localized maintenance and support services while providing extensive knowledge transfer and capacity-building initiatives for Omani professionals.

“This project reflects Thales’ unwavering commitment to support Oman’s ambitious aviation modernization agenda. Together, we are deploying leading-edge technologies that will enhance the safety, efficiency, and resilience of the nation’s airspace while fostering the development of local talent and long-term industrial capabilities.” Lionel de Castellane, Vice-President Air Traffic Control Radars, Thales.
