THEON Partners with RHEINMETALL to Revolutionize Defense with Cutting-Edge PHYLAX Multi-Sensor Innovation

Theon Sensors SA and Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH: A Strategic Partnership for Advanced Electro-Optic Systems

Theon Sensors SA, a vital subsidiary of Theon International Plc (THEON), has joined forces with Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH (RHEINMETALL) to revolutionize the development and production of a state-of-the-art multi-sensor electro-optic system, leveraging THEON’s cutting-edge PHYLAX technology. This collaboration is a significant milestone in THEON’s mission to deliver sophisticated electro-optical solutions for contemporary combat vehicles.

Rheinmetall, one of Europe’s premier defense organizations, possesses extensive expertise in vehicle optronics. By integrating THEON’s PHYLAX system into their stabilized electro-optical sight, SEOSS 210 P, designed for advanced 25mm medium-caliber lightweight turret solutions, they are enhancing modern land platforms.

This partnership solidifies robust industrial and technological collaboration between Theon Sensors and Rheinmetall. It embodies Rheinmetall’s holistic approach to systems integration, merging their platform and fire control expertise with high-performance subsystems from specialized European suppliers, thereby strengthening the European defense industrial landscape.

Upon completing the development and qualification stages within the established timelines, the initiative is poised to move into serial production. This phase will be linked with the fire control system for the Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicle, with an initial contract value exceeding €40 million for numerous units. There is potential for larger orders as the system incorporates into additional vehicle platforms and turret programs.

The PHYLAX system is engineered as a compact, stabilized electro-optic solution that significantly boosts situational awareness, reconnaissance, and target acquisition for combat vehicles. It features a high-definition day camera, a mid-wave thermal imager, and an eye-safe laser rangefinder, all within a lightweight architecture perfectly suited for crewless turrets and remotely operated weapon systems.

This collaboration represents a major leap for THEON, enabling the company to extend its offerings beyond recognized night vision systems towards high-performance stabilized electro-optical solutions specifically designed for vehicle platforms. The global market for advanced electro-optic systems for armored vehicles is rapidly expanding, as military forces worldwide amplify their situational awareness, surveillance, and target acquisition capabilities in today’s digitalized battlefields.

Christian Hadjiminas, Founder and CEO of THEON, stated: “This contract highlights THEON’s design and development prowess in platform-based optronics, exceeding our initial expectations. Our growth has been propelled by strategic investments in ShockEOS and Kappa Optronics, integrating both internal and external design expertise, benefitting from our exceptional Business Development team. This collaborative strength is set to unlock further opportunities, with this contract just the first of many global ventures.”

To realize its ambitious aspirations, THEON has initiated the construction of a new facility in Athens — its third in succession — dedicated to the production of PHYLAX and other associated platform-based products. This new facility, slated to be operational by Q2 2027, will cater to the increasing demands for production capacity, with the project budget around €10 million already included in the Capex guidance for 2026-2027.

Philippe Mennicken, Deputy CEO and Business Development Director of THEON, expressed: “This partnership marks a significant turning point for THEON as we explore the fast-growing field of advanced electro-optical systems for land platforms. We take pride in working alongside Rheinmetall Electronics, a globally recognized leader in stabilized electro-optic and fire-control technology for armored vehicles. We eagerly anticipate strengthening our collaboration on critical programs like IdZ and vehicle platform developments with prominent European manufacturers.”

We are hopeful that our joint efforts with Rheinmetall Electronics will support upcoming vehicle programs incorporating our PHYLAX solution. This achievement highlights THEON’s potential within this sector, though we see it as merely the beginning as we actively seek further opportunities where PHYLAX, along with our TALOS/TRITON product line and KAPPA’s offerings, can be effectively applied.

The agreement was signed by Timo HAAS, CEO Division Digital Systems of RHEINMETALL, and Christian Hadjiminas, Founder and CEO of THEON, in the presence of Dr. Christian MARTENS, CEO Business Unit Integrated Electronic Systems of RHEINMETALL, alongside Philippe MENNICKEN, Deputy CEO and Business Development Director of THEON.
