
Northrop Grumman’s Mission Robotic Vehicle Launches, Ushering in a New Era of In‑Space Servicing
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – July 22, 2026 – Northrop Grumman’s Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) and three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs) successfully launched, significantly enhancing the resilience and sustainability of U.S. assets in space.
This development results from Northrop Grumman’s collaboration with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), bringing forth an innovative and autonomous multi-function space robotics platform. The MRV will open new avenues for satellite servicing, enabling a variety of in-space operations such as robotic satellite inspection, relocation, repair, debris removal, upgrades, experimentation, and in-space assembly.
- First-of-its-kind Robotic Servicing: The MRV integrates DARPA’s robotics payload developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, featuring two fully articulated robotic arms and specialized tools designed to undertake unprecedented space missions.
- Life-Extension: The MEPs act as “jetpacks,” providing supplemental propulsion to extend a satellite’s lifespan and facilitate maneuverability.
- Refuelable: This launch includes the first Passive Refueling Module (PRM), which adheres to a Space Force-approved docking and refueling standard, allowing the MRV to be refueled in orbit and undertake sustained space maneuver missions.
- Artificial Intelligence: The MRV also launched equipped with advanced processing capabilities to support future AI-powered operations. To date, the two operational MEVs have docked with three commercial communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit, providing over ten years of collective mission extension services.
