Getafe, Spain, December 23, 2025 – The Spanish Ministry of Defence has confirmed the acquisition of 18 Airbus C295 transport aircraft. This order aims to replace the existing CN235 and C212 fleets, which have been utilized for training pilots and paratroopers within the Spanish Air and Space Force.
This initiative is a strategic move to standardize fleets and enhance both logistical and operational synergy with the C295 fleet already in service in Spain.
Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, stated, “This order reaffirms Spain’s commitment to the C295, reinforcing national strategic autonomy and sovereignty while boosting the development of the Spanish aeronautical industry and the entire industrial ecosystem.” Following this addition, the Spanish Air and Space Force will operate a total of 46 C295s configured for transport, maritime patrol, and surveillance missions.
The transport-configured C295s are capable of accommodating up to 70 troops or 50 paratroopers, and are designed for operations on unprepared runways. They are equipped to perform cargo and paratrooper drops as well as medical evacuations.
To fulfill the specific needs of the Spanish Air and Space Force, the procurement is categorized into two distinct batches. The first batch of C295s will serve training purposes and transport passengers, paratroopers, and cargo, primarily at the Military Air Transport School located at Matacán Air Base in Salamanca. This role is currently filled by CN235 aircraft. The first of these new aircraft is anticipated for delivery in 2026, with the last set to arrive in 2028.
In the second batch, the C295s will be designated for both manual and automatic paratrooper drops alongside cargo drops, with deliveries expected between 2030 and 2032. Currently, these operations are being conducted using C212 aircraft at the Military Parachuting School situated at Alcantarilla Air Base in Murcia.
Integrated Training and Fleet Support Package
The contract also encompasses a robust ground training system tailored to optimize instructional flights. This system features multiple flight simulators, computer-aided teaching aids, and training management software, specifically designed for the Military Transport School in Salamanca and the Military Paratrooper School in Murcia.
Comprehensive support for the C295 fleet at the Military Transport School is part of the agreement, ensuring maintenance, management of necessary materials, and oversight of the training center through to December 2032.
With a total of 329 orders from 38 countries across four continents and more than 710,000 flight hours logged, the C295 stands as the market leader in its category. The aircraft are assembled at the Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Seville, Spain.
