Rheinmetall and Praetorian Aeronautics deliver AERIE C-UAS system

Rheinmetall, a global leader in integrated technology with specialized air defense capabilities, has teamed up with Australian firm Praetorian Aeronautics to introduce the AERIE: Autonomous-Engagement-Rapid-Interceptor-Effector, a containerized Counter-Uncrewed Aircraft System (C-UAS).

This collaborative research and development effort has successfully realized a prototype within just 12 months, highlighting the commitment of both Rheinmetall and Praetorian Aeronautics to accelerate advanced development in response to emerging challenges.

The AERIE system is a self-sustained, interceptor-agnostic C-UAS launcher, highly mobile and capable of fitting into a 20ft ISO shipping container. It can accommodate over 20 interceptors, allowing for rapid deployment and reloading capabilities.

At the core of the demonstrator are Praetorian Aeronautics’ Arrow Interceptor and the Hadrian Command and Control (C2) system, both designed and developed in Australia. The Arrow Interceptor offers an autonomous, high-speed, and cost-effective solution for the kinetic neutralization of multiple uncrewed systems (UxS) threats beyond visual range. Meanwhile, the Hadrian C2 enhances management of autonomous effectors across air, land, and maritime domains with its advanced AI technology.

The AERIE system presents a low-cost and effective response to the increasingly prevalent threat of low-cost uncrewed drones and aerial systems.

Nathan Poyner, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia, emphasized the company’s ongoing support for Australian sovereign capabilities. “Rheinmetall has a long and proud history of transferring technology and forging alliances with partners around the world. Our collaboration with Praetorian Aeronautics continues this commitment and has produced a working concept of advanced C-UAS, utilizing Australian ingenuity alongside global air defense engineering and manufacturing expertise,” Mr. Poyner stated.

Mr. Brett Hill, CEO of Praetorian Aeronautics, spoke to the organization’s focus on innovation and global partnerships, stating, “Praetorian Aeronautics has been developing cutting-edge systems for over three years. Our partnership with Rheinmetall combines our unique AI-enhanced C2 system and Arrow Interceptor with Rheinmetall’s engineering and production capabilities.” He further added, “Together, we have delivered an Australian air defense solution to tackle emerging global threats.”

The AERIE system aims to progress to full operator demonstrations by Q4 2026.
