Open Architecture Is the Battlefield Advantage

In modern warfare, the electronic environment is the initial theater of conflict before any aircraft or missiles engage. The physical assaults that follow are merely the visible outcomes of a struggle heavily influenced by electromagnetic effects, which have become essential enablers.

To assert dominance in the electromagnetic spectrum, the U.S. military is leaning heavily on open architecture as a fundamental element. Systems designed around open standards facilitate rapid integration, seamless data sharing, and swift evolution—capabilities recognized by the Department of War as vital to Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2).

“The services require systems that can adapt swiftly, integrate into diverse environments, and maintain functionality even as the electromagnetic landscape shifts rapidly,” stated Chris Aebli, President of Communications & Spectrum Dominance at L3Harris.

Open standards empower radios, sensors, and battle management tools to exchange information with ease—an attribute military leaders deem critical for ensuring operational continuity despite threats such as jamming, spoofing, and other forms of disruption.
