Rheinmetall opened autonomous systems centre of excellence in the UK
Rheinmetall is advancing its commitment to next-generation warfare capabilities with the unveiling of its latest initiative: the Advanced Land Autonomy Centre of Excellence (ALACOE) in the United Kingdom. This facility aims to enhance operational effectiveness in the region while addressing the growing demand for autonomous systems. ALACOE is part of an extensive network of centres aimed at localizing autonomy solutions across Europe, the United States, and Australia.
Rheinmetall PATH
Central to this initiative is Rheinmetall PATH, an AI-enabled autonomy kit developed by Rheinmetall Canada. This technology facilitates perception, navigation, and decision-making in complex environments that may be GPS-degraded and contested. PATH is versatile and has been successfully tested on over 40 wheeled and tracked vehicles, enabling functionalities such as autonomous navigation, leader-follower convoy operations, and dynamic obstacle avoidance in various terrains, including dense urban areas and harsh climates.
The technology’s effectiveness has been validated through rigorous multinational trials and competitions, including NATO-linked experiments and the European Land Robot Trials (ELROB), where Rheinmetall systems equipped with PATH showcased top performance in automated convoy operations, proving their readiness for deployment in real-world scenarios.
Strengthening NATO’s Readiness through Canadian Innovation
As nations work to modernize their defense capabilities, this network of centres also aims to bolster Canada’s significant role in the field of autonomous ground systems across Europe. The newly established ALACOE in the UK will cater to the domestic market, bringing cutting-edge ground autonomy directly to the UK and its neighboring regions, thereby reinforcing collective security among NATO allies.

Through ALACOE, Rheinmetall is committed to incorporating UK-based companies into its supply chain to facilitate the localization of advanced technologies. This Centre is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits on both sides of the Atlantic.
