Bundeswehr orders in the mid three-digit million-euro range at Rheinmetall

Rheinmetall has secured a contract from the Bundeswehr for the procurement of 23 units of the Bergepanzer 3 Büffel, an armoured recovery vehicle. This order follows a budgetary decision made by the Bundestag on June 10, 2026, with a total value in the mid-three-digit million-euro range.

In alignment with Germany’s support initiatives for Ukraine, the Bundeswehr had previously transferred 21 units of the Bergepanzer 2 (BPz 2) and 2 units of the Bergepanzer 3 (BPz 3) to Ukraine. The recent order for 23 replacement vehicles not only compensates for these transfers but also enhances the Bundeswehr’s operational capabilities in armoured recovery and support. The first vehicle is slated for delivery by December 2027, a mere 18 months post-contract signing. To facilitate this expedited timeline, Rheinmetall has proactively pre-financed and begun production ahead of schedule, with the final vehicle expected to be delivered by June 2029.

The Bergepanzer 3 A2, as it is designated for the Bundeswehr, represents an advanced iteration of the well-established Bergepanzer 3, incorporating modernizations and obsolescence management. This replacement order underscores the enduring significance of the Bergepanzer 3 as a critical support system for mechanized forces. Rather than introducing new capabilities, this initiative is focused on maintaining long-term operational readiness using a proven system that is manufactured with contemporary processes.

This configuration adheres to current technological standards and possesses the potential for future upgrades. The Bergepanzer 3 is structured for longevity, ensuring persistent support for armoured units and is designed to serve for decades. Investing in a modernized and future-ready vehicle fleet is essential for securing this capability within the Bundeswehr for the long term.
