L3Harris Provides Key Technologies for Newly Commissioned Navy Submarines

L3Harris continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing the operational capabilities of the U.S. Navy’s fleet with advanced systems installed on the newly commissioned USS Massachusetts and USS Idaho. Both Virginia-class submarines were officially commissioned in ceremonies held this spring, reinforcing the technological edge needed for operations in contested undersea environments.

USS Massachusetts officially joined the fleet on March 28, 2023, in Boston Harbor, followed by USS Idaho on April 25, 2023, in Groton, Connecticut.

L3Harris equips Virginia-class submarines with critical technologies including communications systems, electronic warfare, acoustic sensors, mission systems, and power distribution equipment. These advancements are essential for maintaining situational awareness, secure communication, and mission execution in the most demanding operational contexts. Reliability is paramount; when submerged, submarines must operate without equipment failures, as their crews depend entirely on these systems.

“Watching these crews take their stations for the first time reinforces why reliability is our paramount requirement,” stated Nino DiCosmo, President of Maritime, L3Harris. “The men and women of the Silent Service operate in conditions where technology must work without fail, every time.”

The communications systems from L3Harris ensure secure connectivity even in denied environments, while the electronic warfare capabilities serve as a shield against evolving threats. Enhanced acoustic sensors extend the detection range and provide early warnings of any potential threats. These mission systems seamlessly integrate these various capabilities, enabling the crews to focus on their missions instead of equipment concerns.

Commitment That Continues

As USS Massachusetts and USS Idaho embark on their operational journeys, L3Harris remains committed to supporting these submarines throughout their service lives. The company will continue to provide technologies, training, and sustainment that are crucial for mission success, while also investing in next-generation capabilities for future submarine fleets.

While the commissioning ceremonies marked significant milestones, the continuous daily operations on board these submarines require unwavering technological reliability for the sailors who rely on it.
