Trent XWB-84 EP: A Game Changer in Fuel Efficiency for Rolls-Royce Engines
Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) recently celebrated a significant achievement for its Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) engine, which has remarkably delivered nearly double the expected fuel savings during its inaugural year of service.
Following an impressive £1 billion investment aimed at modernizing its Trent fleet, the first Trent XWB-84 EP entered service in May 2025. This engine is certified with a two-decibel noise reduction and boasts an initial one percent fuel burn saving compared to the traditional Trent XWB-84. Data from the first 34 engines in service across three major operators reveals that the Trent XWB-84 EP is successfully achieving a 1.8% reduction in fuel consumption.
This enhancement equates to approximately $450,000 in annual fuel savings per aircraft, totaling around $9 million annually for a standard fleet of 20 Airbus A350-900s. The Trent XWB-84 EP is projected to attain 100,000 flying hours within its first year, underscoring its reliability and positive impact on both operational efficiency and sustainability for customers.
For the past decade, esteemed Rolls-Royce partners in the Middle East—such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and more recently Riyadh Air—have trusted the Trent XWB-84 to power their A350s across medium-haul, long-haul, and ultra-long-range operations.
Adam Davies, Director of Commercial Aviation for the Trent XWB at Rolls-Royce, stated: “This milestone showcases the effectiveness of our investments in the Trent family, delivering tangible results that support our customers’ goals for operational efficiency and sustainability. We are thrilled that our target of at least a one percent improvement in fuel burn has been significantly exceeded. I express my gratitude to our partners for their continued confidence in the Trent XWB family.”
The remarkable performance of the Trent XWB-84 EP comes at a time when demand for the Airbus A350 is surging in the Middle East, with airlines increasingly deploying this aircraft across a diverse range of long-haul routes to cater to the evolving network demands in recent months.
Rolls-Royce remains committed to producing both standard and EP variants of the Trent XWB-84, addressing the varying needs of its customers, with the EP engine setting a new industry standard for fuel efficiency.
