U.S. special operations forces, along with their international partners, are tasked with the critical objective of ensuring continuous surveillance and strike capabilities across remote conflict zones, all while adhering to budget constraints and avoiding reliance on large air bases. In response, L3Harris has developed two modular aircraft variants that offer an impressive five hours of surveillance and strike capabilities without the hefty costs associated with traditional platforms. One variant is currently operational with the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), while the other is poised to serve international clients.
Two Platforms, Common Foundation
The OA-1K Skyraider II is tailored for AFSOC, providing armed overwatch for ground-based special operations forces. Its counterpart, SKY RAIDER II INTERNATIONAL™, maintains the same reliable airframe and modular design, available for direct commercial sales to allied nations.
The operational merits are evident: there are no other platforms that integrate intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities with precision strike, payload capacity, and operational flexibility at this value. The aircraft fosters real-time communication among airborne resources, ground units, and command centers.
Expanding Mission Sets Through Modular Integration
Both aircraft showcase remarkable versatility by enabling the integration of diverse capabilities, effectively transforming them into comprehensive multi-domain mission systems. This modular design allows operators to swiftly adapt to changing mission demands without the need for multiple dedicated platforms.
Customized capabilities feature Red Wolf™ for long-range kinetic strikes; Green Wolf for electronic warfare, including detection, identification, location, and reporting; and WESCAM MX™-Series electro-optical/infrared sensors for surveillance and target acquisition in medium-to-high altitude combat environments.
These integrations enable the modular aircraft to support a variety of mission profiles, including:
- Signals Intelligence: Modular pods allow for plug-and-play signals intelligence solutions, providing real-time enemy communications intelligence.
- Maritime Surveillance: Enhanced maritime awareness at a lower operational cost and extended mission capabilities.
- Counter-UAS and Border Security: Strategies for detecting, tracking, and neutralizing drone threats, ensuring secure borders and providing ground force oversight.
- Disaster Response: Facilitating firefighting efforts, aerial surveillance, and coordination during disaster response operations.
Skyraider II: Purpose-built for AFSOC
With a dual-operator setup, the Skyraider II allows for concurrent intelligence gathering, target development, and mission execution, significantly improving situational awareness and decision-making in complex environments. It complements AFSOC’s asset array, which includes the AC-130J, MC-130J, and CV-22, thus enhancing the robustness of the special operations air fleet.
SKY RAIDER II INTERNATIONAL: Cost-effective Capability for Allied Forces
Fully outfitted with advanced sensors and weapon systems, SKY RAIDER II INTERNATIONAL boasts five hours of operational endurance over a 250-nautical-mile radius — nearly double that of similar medium-altitude ISR platforms while supporting almost double their payload. It also maintains the capability to operate from unpaved airstrips at approximately half the distance of competing aircraft.
Built on the proven Air Tractor AT-802 platform — with over 1,200 units already delivered worldwide — this aircraft provides customers with existing training and logistical frameworks, simplifying integration efforts and speeding up operational readiness.
Strategic Value for Global Operations
L3Harris has established a center of excellence at its Waco, Texas facility for the production of Skyraider II and SKY RAIDER II INTERNATIONAL. This facility is designed to serve as the primary hub for U.S. Air Force production and international operations, delivering a new acquisition approach geared toward rapid deployment without compromising quality or readiness. Furthermore, L3Harris has secured DSP-5 export license approvals for over 20 nations.
The introduction of Skyraider II and SKY RAIDER II INTERNATIONAL marks a pivotal evolution in military strategies, enabling mission accomplishments at reduced costs and faster deployment timelines while enhancing operational adaptability.
