Lockheed Martin Advances Trident II D5 Modernization with $850M Award

TITUSVILLE, Fla., July 10, 2026 – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has secured an $850 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to further the design and development of the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2) program, a vital component of the United States’ nuclear triad. This award was formally announced by the U.S. Department of War in April.

The Trident II D5 strategic weapon system is a linchpin of U.S. deterrence strategy, lauded for its precision, reliability, and operational effectiveness. First brought to life in the 1980s and recently modernized in 2017, the system is now being enhanced to guarantee its operational readiness through the 2040s and beyond.

“Lockheed Martin is fully committed to the mission as we move forward into this next phase,” said Eric Scherff, vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Program. “This award marks another important step along the way as we continue delivering a credible and resilient deterrent for the American forces and allies.”

WHY IT MATTERS

Submarine-launched ballistic missiles constitute the sea-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad, complementing intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear-capable bombers. These systems account for roughly 70 percent of deployed strategic deterrent capabilities, offering unparalleled survivability, persistent presence, and operational flexibility.

Maintaining a robust and modern deterrent is essential for American national security and the assurance of allies. Continuous investment in initiatives such as D5LE2 enables Lockheed Martin to advance technologies that bolster deterrence and empower the warfighter within an increasingly complex threat landscape.

CAREERS THAT SUPPORT AMERICAN DEFENSE

To further support this critical work, Lockheed Martin is expanding its workforce across various locations, actively seeking engineers, technicians, and other professionals who are dedicated to national security and innovation. Opportunities are available for those interested in making a significant impact on a global mission.

Work will be carried out in Colorado, Florida, Utah, Washington, Georgia, and the National Capital Region.
