Rheinmetall breaks ground to expand Quebec facility
Rheinmetall Canada is marking a significant milestone with the commencement of an expansion project at its facility in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, coinciding with the company’s 40th anniversary. This expansion underscores Rheinmetall’s commitment to fostering Canadian innovation and enhancing its advanced manufacturing capabilities.
The expansion will add 4,830 square meters of production space as well as 2,230 square meters of warehousing capacity. This substantial increase is critical for the production, integration, and maintenance of advanced autonomous Uncrewed Ground Systems (UGS) in Canada.
The timing of this expansion is crucial as demand for Rheinmetall’s land autonomy solutions continues to rise. Over the past year, the company established three Advanced Land Autonomy Centres of Excellence aimed at fully localizing Canadian-developed solutions and speeding up the delivery of strategic capabilities.
Canadian autonomy on the international stage
Central to this expansion is Rheinmetall’s PATH autonomy technology and the Mission Master suite of autonomous UGSs. These solutions, developed in Canada with input from key allies across the transatlantic, are now well-positioned for scalable domestic production and long-term operational support.
An ecosystem of Canadian collaborators
Rheinmetall’s deep integration within the Canadian defense ecosystem has facilitated a nimble and innovative approach to research and development. Throughout its journey, the company has partnered with a growing array of Canadian stakeholders in industry, academia, and research institutions, including Zeal Motor, Université de Sherbrooke, Quaze Technologies, and the Centre d’Innovation du Haut-Richelieu. This collaborative landscape is indicative of the sovereign industrial capacity capable of meeting current and future needs.
Rheinmetall’s supply chain includes nearly 1,000 Canadian small- to medium-sized businesses, with more than 600 of these located in Quebec. Such partnerships are crucial to Rheinmetall’s international growth as it scales production and meets both domestic and allied requirements.
Investing in Canada’s future industrial capacity
Since 2024, Rheinmetall Canada has committed over CAD 150 million to domestic investments in advanced technologies and capability development. In its four decades of operation within Canada, the company has successfully delivered over 20 programs to the Canadian Armed Forces, contributing more than CAD 1.5 billion to the economy.
The outlook for Rheinmetall remains positive as it seeks further opportunities in engineering, advanced manufacturing, systems integration, software development, logistics, and in-service support. The company is dedicated to driving innovation alongside its Canadian partners and seizing export opportunities through its global network.
