Saab and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) have successfully conducted a flight test at GA-ASI’s Desert Horizon Flight Operations Facility in Southern California, demonstrating the capabilities of the LoyalEye airborne early warning (AEW) system integrated with the MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicle. This test validated the system’s performance, particularly its ability to detect, track, and classify airborne targets, showcasing its effectiveness in a realistic operational environment.
This test is part of an evaluation program that has been progressing since the system’s first flight in May 2026, reflecting the rapid advancement of this critical capability.
“Today’s flight test is a pivotal moment in the evolution of unmanned AEW capabilities,” stated Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance. “LoyalEye is developed to enhance existing AEW&C solutions, providing greater flexibility and persistent surveillance capabilities. Today’s results confirm its effectiveness in operational scenarios.”
GA-ASI President David R. Alexander expressed enthusiasm about the test, noting its significance. “This flight test has been one of our most eagerly awaited. The interest in AEW capabilities on the MQ-9B from customers worldwide is extremely high. Integrating such capabilities just makes sense,” he added.
With LoyalEye integrated into the MQ-9B, the unmanned platform can operate autonomously or in conjunction with manned AEW&C systems. This capability allows for comprehensive surveillance over extensive areas, especially in scenarios where prolonged endurance, vast geographic reach, and reduced aircrew risk are essential.
