L3Harris Announces Billion Dollar Expansion to Boost Solid Rocket Motor Production in Orange County, Virginia

ORANGE COUNTY, Va., April 15, 2026 — In a significant development for the defense sector, L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX), along with Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and the Orange County Board of Supervisors, has unveiled plans for a robust expansion of solid rocket motor production at its facility in Orange County. This initiative will establish the Virginia Advanced Propulsion Facilities (VAPF).

The expansion, valued at over $1 billion, aims to enhance manufacturing capacity, expanding the existing footprint by more than double and creating over 350 jobs within the next five years.

Governor Spanberger praised L3Harris for their historical growth in Central Virginia: “This investment represents not just new jobs, but the strength of our workforce and our commitment to the defense and advanced manufacturing sectors. L3Harris’ partnership signifies a shared vision for the future of Virginia.”

Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bryan Nicol expressed enthusiasm for the announcement: “Supporting L3Harris in their $1.265 billion expansion and the creation of more than 350 new jobs is monumental for our community. This initiative represents a vote of confidence in Orange County’s business environment and workforce.” Nicol noted the support from Governor Spanberger’s Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund and the General Assembly’s Major Employment Investment Project Approval Commission in realizing this opportunity.

The new facilities will facilitate critical operations for solid rocket motor production, encompassing mixing, grinding, casting, and final assembly processes.

Currently, L3Harris operates a 256,000 square foot facility in Virginia, recognized as the company’s Center of Excellence for Propellant Research and Small to Medium-sized Solid Rocket Motor Production. Additionally, L3Harris is modernizing and expanding production capabilities across its facilities in Camden, Arkansas, and Huntsville, Alabama, with the aim to significantly enhance solid rocket motor production rates.
