Rheinmetall and Argotec launch their first satellite into space with SpaceX
Rheinmetall has reached a significant milestone in its strategic partnership with Italian space company Argotec. On October 1, 2026, the duo successfully launched their inaugural satellite into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, United States.
This achievement marks a pivotal moment for the Düsseldorf-based technology group, operating through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. It represents the beginning of the targeted development of an independent, satellite-based capability aimed at enhancing national security and military situational awareness, all in close collaboration with relevant institutional stakeholders. This successful launch is a testament to Rheinmetall’s expanding ambitions within the space sector.
Focus on Airspace Surveillance and System Integration
The newly launched satellite program is designed with a focus on intelligence gathering rather than traditional ground mapping. The sensors aboard the satellite are tasked with identifying ground-based indicators of potential airborne threats, providing critical early warning capabilities and essential data for air defense operations. The situational data and imagery collected will be processed utilizing artificial intelligence, ensuring seamless integration into national and air defense systems, readily accessible to military customers. This advanced system amalgamates various capability layers, including space-based observation, ground-based nodes, and tactical networks, operating under a sophisticated Command and Control Post tailored for modern defense and security needs, enabling missions focused on intelligence superiority.
Rheinmetall has found a capable industrial partner in Argotec, which boasts extensive experience from NASA and other leading global space programs. The current mission success will allow both parties to validate their technical capabilities in real-world scenarios and propel them through incremental joint advancements.
Core Element of a Future Satellite Constellation
“The successful launch of our first satellite marks a milestone in strengthening national security and space capabilities,” remarked Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. “Integrating space-based data into existing defense architectures is a critical step in addressing the changed security environment. This cooperation confirms the trust in our technological integration expertise and makes a vital contribution to technological sovereignty and resilient, networked situational awareness.”
“This successful satellite launch is a key milestone in building the next generation of space infrastructures designed for operational and defense needs,” stated David Avino, CEO and founder of Argotec. “Together with Rheinmetall, we’re turning space technology into a valuable operational asset, scalable, connected, and prepared to support complex defense scenarios. This is an important step toward greater technological autonomy, as we transform data into near real-time information to aid decision-makers.”
The medium- to long-term project is being implemented in a modular fashion. The success of this launch establishes a technological foundation for validating operational functionality in orbit, paving the way for future funding phases.
Building upon this initial capability, the space-based component is set to progressively evolve into a more extensive satellite constellation, with plans for the next satellite launch already incorporated in the program roadmap for 2028.
About Argotec
Argotec, headquartered in Turin, Italy, is an international space firm specializing in the design, manufacturing, and operation of advanced satellite systems and space infrastructures for various institutional, commercial, governmental, and defense clients worldwide. In 2022, Argotec became the only company globally to operate two microsatellites simultaneously in deep space during NASA’s DART and Artemis I missions. Currently, Argotec is actively involved in numerous flagship programs, including the HEO Earth observation constellation developed under Italy’s IRIDE program and the HENON mission, which focuses on studying solar storms and space weather phenomena crucial for the resilience of strategic infrastructure. Additionally, the company develops advanced dual-use technologies for satellite cooperation, edge computing, and data intelligence, addressing security, monitoring, and mission-critical applications across both civil and defense sectors. In 2024, Argotec inaugurated SpacePark, a highly automated satellite production facility in Turin, and in 2026, expanded its reach with a U.S. facility in Melbourne, Florida, along with a telecommunications technology hub in California.
