Airbus DS Airborne Solutions (ADAS) has achieved a significant milestone, reaching over 10,000 flight hours with its Heron 1 Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) as part of its ongoing operation with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, in Malta.
In 2025, Frontex awarded ADAS a renewed four-year contract for maritime surveillance services covering the Central and Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The Heron 1, a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), is provided by ADAS’s long-term partner, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). These services are executed from Malta and Crete, Greece, ensuring a full turnkey solution.
Remarkably, these services have been efficiently delivered over the last five years using just one UAS, showcasing ADAS’s ability to sustain continuous flight operations despite limited resources. This achievement reaffirms ADAS’s proficiency in managing complex UAS missions under real-world conditions.
The operational environment has presented several challenges, including long missions over open sea, varying adverse weather conditions, and the complexities of operating from an international airport within foreign airspace. Each of these factors demands exceptional professionalism, coordination, and precise flight operations.
“This success underlines the high reliability of the system, alongside the dedication and expertise of the teams involved,” stated Ralf Hastedt, ADAS Managing Director for Sales and Business Development. “This milestone would not have been attainable without the commitment and professionalism of ADAS personnel on the ground and those supporting from behind the scenes.”
