Northrop Grumman is Supercharging Advanced Fighter Production with AI‑Powered Automation

Northrop Grumman is revolutionizing the F-35 Lightning II program through the integration of advanced automation and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies aimed at accelerating production and enhancing aircraft performance. These innovations are essential for building the 5th generation stealth fighter more efficiently, aligning with critical Department of War efforts and supplying a highly capable platform for the warfighter and allied forces.

Enhancing Efficiency Through Automation

To boost the speed, capacity, and efficiency of manufacturing these key systems, Northrop Grumman’s production teams are deploying new automated systems for production and quality control, leveraging AI. These systems represent the most advanced integrated avionics technology, offering F-35 pilots a seamless, highly integrated view of the battlespace, which significantly improves their effectiveness and situational awareness in complex mission environments.

This integration of technologies is streamlining operations on the factory floor, ensuring that Northrop Grumman continues to deliver top-notch products for the U.S. military and its allies.

A notable recent advancement is the implementation of a new tooling system called a “co-bot,” or collaborative robot, which works alongside technicians on the production line.

Lavell Catlin, manufacturing manager for the CNI production line, remarked, “We recently installed a co-bot that assists technicians in precisely installing bolts to fix the front housing area of the Communications, Navigation and Identification (CNI) module. This system reduces what previously took hours to complete down to just a few minutes. Additionally, we’ve been able to reallocate some employees to other critical efforts, enhancing the overall speed and performance of our production process.”

AI-Enabled Systems Improve Quality and Performance

In addition to automating key assembly steps, production teams are also enhancing their application of AI-driven quality control systems. These tools conduct detailed analyses of completed modules, identifying potential issues before they leave the factory. This additional level of oversight underscores Northrop Grumman’s commitment to providing highly reliable systems that aircrews can trust when it counts.

Catlin added, “Our AI-based integration of quality control systems has significantly aided in detecting even the smallest issue in completed modules to guarantee we deliver high-quality products consistently.”

Accelerating Production with Automation and AI

At Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Assembly Line in Palmdale, California, automation, robotics, and mixed reality tools are employed to produce the center fuselage, which is the largest stealth-critical structural assembly of the F-35, at a remarkable rate of one unit every 30 hours. This swift production capability is essential for fulfilling the requirements of the world’s highest production rate for 5th generation aircraft, ensuring the program maintains the necessary speed and scale to enhance mission readiness across the global fleet.

Northrop Grumman excels in producing advanced aerostructures with proprietary machinery and tools, supplying essential components, including wing skins and nacelles, for all aircraft variants at significant rates. This leadership in automated composite manufacturing ensures structural integrity and optimal performance in challenging environments.

Furthermore, Northrop Grumman spearheads the F-35 industry team in low-observable technology, leveraging decades of expertise in stealth to guarantee that the F-35 can operate effectively in hostile settings.

As a pivotal industry partner in the Lockheed Martin-led F-35 team, Northrop Grumman plays a vital role in the development, production, and maintenance of all three F-35 Lightning II variants for the U.S. and allied nations. From the center fuselage, which acts as the backbone of the aircraft, to the advanced radar and communications systems that serve as the F-35’s eyes and ears, Northrop Grumman delivers mission-critical capabilities that enable the aircraft to dominate in conflicted environments. Paired with comprehensive operational support and sustainment, Northrop Grumman’s unparalleled expertise equips F-35 pilots with a definitive advantage in performance, survivability, and situational awareness on each mission.
