NATO Signals Intent to Expand Maritime ISR Capability with Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton
ANKARA, Türkiye – July 7, 2026 – NATO has taken a significant step toward enhancing its Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) to pursue the acquisition of Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton aircraft. This initiative underscores NATO’s dedication to boosting allied maritime security and situational awareness.
- Four nations endorsed the LOI at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum.
- In collaboration with NATO, the U.S. Navy, and trans-Atlantic industrial partners, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) will build and deliver the aircraft. Key European industry partners will provide components of the ground station and supporting data processing infrastructure.
- NATO has previously operated Northrop Grumman’s RQ-4D Phoenix (a variant of the Global Hawk) from Sigonella, Italy, supplying commanders with crucial ISR data to facilitate joint decision-making.
- The MQ-4C Triton offers exceptional maritime surveillance capabilities and works in conjunction with crewed platforms across multiple domains through timely data exchange. It will augment the Phoenix fleet by increasing NATO’s organic ISR assets, broadening surveillance coverage throughout the alliance’s northern, eastern, and southern flanks. Leveraging the Global Hawk lineage, Triton will present opportunities for cost efficiencies in operations, maintenance, and training with the existing Phoenix fleet.

Expert Insight:
Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of the global surveillance division at Northrop Grumman, commented, “Our collaboration with NATO and the U.S. Navy strengthens the Alliance’s ground and maritime surveillance capabilities. Like Phoenix, Triton carries out ISR missions at higher altitudes and with greater endurance than medium-altitude systems, ready to provide NATO with new levels of capability and operational flexibility to monitor and protect maritime interests from the Mediterranean to the High North.”
Program Overview:
The MQ-4C Triton, designed for use by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force, supports a wide range of missions, including maritime patrol, signals intelligence, and search and rescue. It delivers unmatched persistent surveillance that anticipates adversary behavior, facilitating improved planning and joint military responses. Triton builds on Northrop Grumman’s leadership in autonomy and high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) operations to deliver superior maritime surveillance capabilities.
