Koblenz, Germany, 06 June 2025 – Airbus has secured a significant contract with the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) to enhance the safety of 23 Luftwaffe A400Ms by equipping them with Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) protection systems. This advanced technology is designed to safeguard military transport aircraft from incoming missiles equipped with infrared seekers. In addition to the DIRCM systems, Airbus will also provide crucial support services including training, service bulletins, and specialized tools.
Gerd Weber, Head of the A400M programme at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the critical role of the A400M, stating, “Transporting troops, equipment and humanitarian supplies; refuelling other aircraft and helicopters in the air; serving as a flying hospital for the treatment of wounded personnel – the Airbus A400M is the face and workhorse of the German Air Force. The new DIRCM system will provide A400M crews with even greater protection during their missions around the world and expand the already broad range of applications for this exceptional aircraft.”
The DIRCM systems, manufactured by Elbit Systems, will be installed on the A400Ms during scheduled maintenance at Airbus facilities located in Manching, southern Germany, as well as in Getafe and Seville, Spain. These aircraft are utilized for tactical operations, including medical evacuation in crisis zones, while the logistical variants of the A400M are engaged in standard operations like long-range troop transport and the movement of heavy armored vehicles, helicopters, and specialized civil engineering equipment.
Currently, Airbus is testing the DIRCM system on a German Air Force A400M in Seville, Spain, with certification expected by summer 2025, and installation scheduled for completion on all 23 A400Ms by 2032.
