L3Harris Conducts Successful Hot-Fire Test in Major Milestone for Next Generation Interceptor Program
MELBOURNE, Fla., Aug. 10, 2026 — L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has marked a significant advancement in the Missile Defense Agency’s Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) Program by successfully conducting a hot-fire test of its stage two advanced large solid rocket motor (SRM). This test was executed as part of a collaboration with Lockheed Martin, all aimed at enhancing the nation’s homeland missile defense capabilities.
The hot-fire test confirmed the system’s design integrity, demonstrating that the SRM ignited successfully and completed a full-duration burn. This provided critical data for analyzing performance characteristics ahead of upcoming advanced testing later this year. The engineers carried out the test in a simulated high-altitude vacuum environment, thereby evaluating system performance in the upper stratosphere.
Scott Alexander, President of Propulsion Systems for Missile Solutions at L3Harris, stated, “NGI is critical to the security of the United States and will serve as a cornerstone of our homeland missile defense once deployed. This successful hot-fire test underscores L3Harris’ dedication to delivering reliable, high-performance propulsion systems, and we remain focused on the upcoming first flight test of NGI.”
L3Harris takes on the role of primary propulsion and control systems provider for NGI, developing both the stage one and stage two advanced large solid rocket motors, in addition to the Attitude Control System (ACS) and Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS). These systems are essential for enabling precise maneuvering and engagement capabilities necessary to intercept advanced threats.
The manufacturing of ACS and DACS components occurs in California and Virginia, while advanced large solid rocket motors are produced in Alabama and Arkansas. This distributed industrial base ensures that L3Harris is well-positioned to deliver resilient, mission-ready capabilities.
