Today, Saab confirmed its intention to collaborate with several prominent Canadian aerospace firms as a key initial step towards establishing a robust national ecosystem aimed at building, delivering, and supporting the Gripen E advanced multi-role fighter, should the Government of Canada choose to proceed with a Gripen acquisition.
n
If selected, Saab and its Canadian partners will develop comprehensive domestic capabilities for production, final assembly, support, and further advancements in airpower technologies. This collaboration will encompass in-service support (ISS), training, and long-term sustainment capabilities.
n
“Canada’s fighter capability is a long-term national investment. Together with CAE, IMP, and Magellan Aerospace, we are prepared to establish a strong Canadian industrial ecosystem around Gripen that delivers operational effect, national sovereignty, and lasting industrial and technological benefits,” stated Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.
n
Saab has entered into a new Teaming Agreement with IMP to create a final assembly line for the Gripen fighter in Canada, contingent upon the country’s decision to acquire the aircraft. IMP will also handle electrical assembly production and ISS for Canada’s Gripens.
n
Additionally, Saab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Magellan Aerospace to facilitate local manufacturing of advanced aerostructures, composite structures, and structural assemblies in Canada, should the Gripen acquisition proceed.
n
Furthermore, Saab has a prior Memorandum of Understanding with CAE to provide advanced fighter pilot and technician training, mission systems engineering, and ongoing support/sustainment capabilities in Canada, contingent on the aircraft’s selection.
n
“We are proud to be selected by Saab to establish a Canadian capability for the production and long-term support of Gripen. While that capability will be tailored to meet Canada’s requirements, its potential extends beyond Canada. There is a real opportunity for IMP to produce and support aircraft for international Gripen customers, positioning Canadian industry as an integral part of the global Gripen program,” remarked David Gossen, President of IMP Aerospace & Defence.
n
“As a proud Canadian manufacturer, Magellan Aerospace is well-positioned to leverage decades of aerospace manufacturing expertise for the Gripen program, thereby creating high-tech jobs and strengthening our sovereign defense capabilities right here in Canada,” added Haydn Martin, Vice President of Business Development at Magellan Aerospace.
n
“CAE has extensive experience enhancing the mission readiness of fighter pilots worldwide,” said Pascal Grenier, President of CAE Defense & Security. “We are deeply committed to the Royal Canadian Air Force and its training needs. Should the Government of Canada select the Gripen, CAE is ready to partner with Saab to support Canada’s future fighter force.”
n
These partnerships aim to bolster Canada’s sovereign defense capabilities while fostering advanced aerospace and defense expertise across the country. Once activated, they are projected to generate significant job opportunities and skill enhancements in areas like high-technology manufacturing, advanced materials, and model-based systems engineering. They will also equip Canada with the self-sufficient capability to deploy, sustain, and enhance a critical national asset for decades to come.
n
Moreover, Saab is actively engaging a diverse array of Canadian companies, academic institutions, and research organizations to further cultivate a future defense industrial ecosystem in Canada.
