DALLAS, Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has introduced a cutting-edge interceptor, the PAC-3 Edge™, designed to enhance U.S. military capabilities against hypersonic and advanced missile threats. This latest addition enhances the Army’s Arsenal of Freedom, leveraging combat-proven PAC-3® MSE technology for decisive defensive performance.

THE BIG PICTURE

The PAC-3 Edge is currently part of the U.S. Army’s Future Interceptor program, moving forward into the next stage of development. This progression underscores the Army’s trust in Lockheed Martin’s robust Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) expertise.

Development and testing of the PAC-3 Edge will begin in 2027, with an eye towards rapid deployment by 2031.

WHAT’S NEW

The intercepting system will feature a transformative seeker developed by Lockheed Martin’s Strigo Product Center. This innovation aims to greatly boost performance against advanced threats. The PAC-3 Edge will also integrate a multi-pulse solid rocket motor created by Northrop Grumman, which incorporates enhancements for improved precision thrust during flight. Additionally, the interceptor will benefit from upgraded control systems, enhancing performance across various ranges and altitudes.

EXPERT PERSPECTIVE

Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control, stated, “Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Edge interceptor, building on the combat-proven PAC-3 MSE, offers heightened maneuverability, power, and speed, ensuring the Army’s layered defense remains the most advanced globally.”

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Enhanced Threat Coverage – The new interceptor aims to provide capabilities against a spectrum of air, missile, and hypersonic threats at extended ranges and higher altitudes, broadening the Army’s IAMD coverage.
  • Combat-Proven Lineage – PAC-3 Edge evolves from the PAC-3 missile family, which includes variants like the cost-effective PAC-3 ACE and the distinguished PAC-3 MSE, delivering unparalleled interceptor capabilities.
  • New Tech-Driven Capability – Lockheed Martin has allocated $250 million to the Strigo Product Center to advance seeker technology, enhancing precision and agility in countering emerging threats.
  • Layered Defense – This interceptor fortifies the Army’s existing IAMD capabilities, contributing to a multi-tiered defense to safeguard critical assets both domestically and internationally.
  • Integration through Innovation – The PAC-3 Edge is designed for compatibility with current and future IAMD systems, including the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) and the M903 launcher.
