Rheinmetall in South Africa – More energy

Rheinmetall, through its joint venture Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), is actively engaging in the energy transition in South Africa by tapping into renewable resources such as wind, hydropower, and solar energy. The focus is not just to power its operations, primarily centered on the production of large-caliber ammunition, but to contribute to the broader goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and achieving CO2 neutrality by 2035.

Currently, South Africa sources about 90 percent of its electricity from aging coal-fired power plants, posing significant challenges due to their unreliability and frequent outages orchestrated by the state’s power utility, Eskom. To address these issues, RDM is leveraging its expertise in chemistry and industrial plant engineering to generate green energy beyond its immediate operational needs.

According to RDM CEO Jan-Patrick Helmsen, the company’s strategy revolves around innovation and practical solutions, stating, “Don’t talk – do!” His leadership reflects a commitment to implementing intelligent energy solutions tailored for the region.

Intelligent Energy Solutions

To enhance its energy efficiency and decrease its carbon footprint, RDM plans to replace its internal fleet of 350 vehicles with electric alternatives, powered by charging stations linked to in-house solar farms. Initial projects include electric buses for internal transportation, alongside the development of a kindergarten equipped with solar panels, ensuring that the facility operates with a minimal carbon footprint.

Utilization of Existing Expertise

In addition to existing technologies, RDM is innovating further by utilizing its extensive knowledge in chemical engineering to create new solutions for independent power generation. A notable advancement is the development of a compact energy solution housed within four 20-foot containers, capable of supplying electricity to a settlement of 30 houses continuously and sustainably. The system comprises solar panels, an electrolysis unit for hydrogen production, a storage container, and a fuel cell for energy supply during non-sunny periods. Furthermore, this technology allows for the production of usable oxygen, which could benefit medical facilities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas.

Harnessing Solar Potential

South Africa’s geography enables solar operations to yield significantly higher energy output compared to Germany, thus enhancing the feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen production. Historical collaborations between Germany and South Africa have set the framework for addressing each nation’s energy challenges, with recent discussions held between leaders from both countries to further this agenda.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition’s Role

RDM is positioning itself as a key player in the green energy landscape by offering comprehensive solutions including:

  • Full in-house solar capacity
  • A global green hydrogen supplier
  • Complete turnkey solutions
  • Permanently installed large-scale green hydrogen factories
  • Mobile, modular, and scalable green hydrogen factories

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

With 5,500 hectares of company-owned land available for solar farm development, RDM is well-positioned to produce substantial amounts of clean energy. This capability would allow the company not only to fulfill its energy demands sustainably but also to distribute surplus green electricity and hydrogen, further integrating its operations with the broader economy.

As emphasized by Helmsen, “We are at the beginning of a large and rapidly advancing energy industry that is being redefined.” RDM aims to be at the forefront of these developments, establishing itself as a pivotal green energy supplier in South Africa.
