Lockheed Martin presented Germany’s first F-35A Lightning II to the German government during a ceremony in Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 18, 2026.
FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) marked a significant milestone by presenting Germany’s first F-35A Lightning II fighter jet to the German government at its F-35 production facility. This event, attended by senior government and military leaders from both Germany and the United States, reinforces allied interoperability and mission readiness within NATO.
German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius described the F-35A as the “world’s most advanced combat aircraft,” emphasizing its stealth capabilities, integration with other platforms, and advanced sensor technology. He noted, “The F-35A can gather vast amounts of data and rapidly synthesize them into a comprehensive operational picture. The first fighter jets will be delivered this year, with full operational capability expected by 2029. This aircraft provides a key capability not only for the German Air Force but also for NATO as a whole. Together with 19 other nations, we are implementing transatlantic cooperation, which enhances training, exercises, and operational effectiveness, making us stronger as an alliance.”
Selected by 20 nations, including 13 European nations, the F-35A is set to deliver sovereign capabilities for Germany, bolster NATO interoperability, and enhance allied deterrence for years to come. With its advanced specifications, the F-35 stands as a cornerstone of European security, offering the Luftwaffe unmatched fighter capabilities.
Lieutenant General Holger Neumann, Chief of the German Air and Space Force, remarked, “With the F-35, the German Air and Space Force is acquiring a modern, proven, and highly capable 5th Generation fighter jet. This will not only transform our operational strategies but will also integrate us into the broader international F-35 community, strengthening Germany and NATO simultaneously.”

Since the program’s inception in 2001, German industry has played a vital role in the F-35 enterprise and will continue to do so, meeting the growing global demand and enhancing Europe’s contribution to the supply chain. Lockheed Martin actively seeks additional industrial partnerships within Germany, aiming to create jobs in the manufacturing, sustainment, and research sectors related to 5th Generation fighter aircraft.
Germany’s program anticipates the acquisition of 35 F-35As, with the first eight aircraft scheduled for delivery to Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas for pilot training this fall. The initial German F-35s are expected to arrive in Germany by late 2027.
