Northrop Grumman to Deliver New Space Domain Awareness Prototype Satellite

DULLES, Va – Sept. 18, 2026 – Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has been awarded a contract to provide a prototype satellite for the Department of War Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Geosynchronous High-Resolution Optical Space-Based Tactical Reconnaissance (GHOST-R) mission. This new award expands Northrop Grumman’s involvement in the realm of commercial, low-cost space systems, building on the success of their previously developed Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP).

As per the contract, Northrop Grumman will:

  • Construct a satellite utilizing the company’s high-rate production ESPASat-L platform, incorporating optical payloads from TRL-11 based in Irvine, California.
  • Assemble, integrate, test, and deliver an operational GHOST-R prototype to the U.S. Space Force within a swift 24-month timeline.
  • Leverage operationally proven platforms to enhance space domain awareness, aligning with commercial deployment timelines to facilitate the rapid rollout of future spacecraft constellations.

The GHOST-R satellites will improve the characterization of resident space objects along with battle damage assessments and positive identifications in geosynchronous orbit. The U.S. Space Force plans to introduce a layer of cost-effective commercial satellites to enhance dynamic space operations, helping to address potential threats effectively.

Northrop Grumman’s ESPASat-L, comparable in size to a small suitcase, integrates seamlessly with the company’s ESPAStar payload rideshare platform, offering a modular and economical pathway to space. The forthcoming GHOST-R operational prototype is set to provide commercial support for current space domain awareness systems, enabling the Space Force to adopt a hybrid constellation architecture.

Assembly, integration, and testing of the spacecraft will take place at the company’s facilities in Dulles, Virginia and Gilbert, Arizona, with delivery aligned on an expedited timeline to the United States Space Force.
