Electrification presents a transformative opportunity to reduce fuel usage and operational emissions within the shipping industry, although its effectiveness is influenced by factors such as vessel size, route, and operational patterns.
Vessels operating on short, predictable routes that allow for regular recharging are particularly suited for fully electric propulsion. Conversely, larger oceangoing ships face challenges due to their higher energy demands per voyage, which complicates the implementation of full battery-electric systems. An alternative is the adoption of hybrid systems, which integrate energy storage systems (ESS) that work in tandem with conventional engines, providing auxiliary propulsion or power requirements onboard.
The viability of electrification is also contingent upon necessary infrastructure at ports. Battery-electric vessels require adequate access to recharging facilities, while shore power systems enable ships to draw electricity directly from the grid while docked. This necessitates sufficient capacity both at ports and within the broader electrical grid.
In pursuit of developing battery-hybrid propulsion technologies, Hanwha is actively working across multiple components of this initiative. In April 2026, Hanwha Power, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Engine entered into a partnership with classification society RINA to further advance these technologies for both new and retrofitted vessels. This collaboration will streamline system integration under Hanwha Power, focus on marine energy storage through Hanwha Aerospace, and leverage propulsion technology from Hanwha Engine.
Hanwha’s comprehensive efforts in maritime electrification encompass not only propulsion and energy storage but also the enhancement of port infrastructures. The company’s Norwegian subsidiary, SEAM, is dedicated to advancing electric propulsion and power-automation systems, including retrofitting solutions for existing fleets. Furthermore, Hanwha manufactures immersion-cooled marine energy storage systems, certified by DNV and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), while also engaging in dialogue with European port authorities regarding energy storage capabilities and shoreside charging infrastructure.
