British Airways selects RTX’s Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines to power up to 63 Airbus A320neo aircraft
UK flag carrier opts for game-changing geared architecture
LONDON, July 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — During the Farnborough International Airshow, Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), announced that British Airways has chosen GTF engines to power a total of 63 Airbus A320neo aircraft, comprising 33 firm orders and 30 options. As part of the agreement, Pratt & Whitney will also ensure the engines are maintained under a 12-year EngineWise® Comprehensive services contract, which aims to enhance fleet efficiency and reduce overall ownership costs. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2027.
Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, emphasized the significance of this decision, stating, “Today marks a pivotal moment and a strong vote of confidence in the GTF engine as the UK’s flagship carrier, British Airways, becomes the newest GTF customer. The GTF engine, recognized as the most fuel-efficient option for the A320neo, will assist British Airways in achieving its international fleet expansion objectives while improving the passenger travel experience.”
Currently, British Airways operates the A320ceo family aircraft powered by IAE V2500 engines.
The GTF engine technology offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and boasts a 75% smaller noise footprint compared to its predecessor. More than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are currently in service worldwide with over 90 customers, and the engine has a backlog exceeding 8,000 units, indicating robust market demand. The GTF Advantage engine, set to enter service later this year, promises operators double the time on wing, leading fuel efficiency, and enhanced range capabilities.
