EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Aug. 4, 2026 — In a significant leap forward for airborne autonomy, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works®, in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (TPS) and industry partners, successfully demonstrated sensor-driven autonomy on a fighter aircraft. Utilizing an artificial intelligence (AI) agent, the team executed air intercepts against a live target based on real-time targeting information sourced from operational sensors. Across a series of eight flights, the X-62 Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft (VISTA) conducted 27 AI-controlled intercepts.

THE OBJECTIVE

The primary goal was to validate that the X-62 and its integrated autonomy architecture could effectively use real sensor data to inform AI behavior, thereby confirming the entire testing cycle from development to execution.
