Thales Builds Cryptographic Security for the Age of AI and Post-Quantum Computing

Thales has launched Luna 8, a cutting-edge hardware security module (HSM) designed to offer quantum-resistant security solutions for critical data and applications. This new HSM is powered by a Thales-designed cryptographic processor, promising unmatched performance and enhanced protection while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to evolving security needs.

Basing its capabilities on decades of cryptographic expertise, Luna 8 fuses trusted security with support for emerging technologies, including post-quantum cryptography.

According to the 2026 Thales Data Threat Report, the top concern for organizations is the threat of Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL) attacks, with 59% of organizations currently exploring post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms to prepare for potential quantum threats. In response, Thales has designed Luna 8 to securely store, protect, and manage cryptographic keys while providing market-leading performance and scalability.

As companies adapt to the increasing demands of quantum threats, expanding AI workloads, and stricter regulations, Luna 8 delivers the necessary performance and cryptographic agility essential for safeguarding sensitive data and applications.

Key features of the Luna 8 HSM include:

• Future-proof: Features an upgradeable architecture for introducing new algorithms and standards as security needs evolve.
• Portability: Ensures seamless migration for existing customers by using current interfaces without requiring application changes.
• Flexibility: Available as a unified hardware appliance that supports a variety of cryptographic applications. Future releases will expand capabilities to payment HSMs for transaction protection.

Luna 8 marks the debut of the next-generation HSM on the new Thales HSM platform. It is currently available as a network appliance, offering quantum-safe, tamper-resistant security and scalable performance. This module is undergoing independent assessments to ensure compliance with stringent security standards, including FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and EU Common Criteria.
