In a notable development leading up to and during the recent NATO summits in Copenhagen, Saab has solidified its role in enhancing security measures across Denmark. The Swedish Armed Forces, in collaboration with Saab’s advanced anti-drone system featuring the Giraffe 1X radar, were actively deployed to secure various locations throughout the country. Following this, Denmark has officially opted to purchase additional Giraffe 1X systems, which were initially rented to address immediate security needs.
Notably, Saab demonstrated its commitment to rapid response by delivering these systems just three days after receiving the initial order from the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO). Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance, highlighted that this swift turnaround was facilitated by strong organizational capabilities and remarkable cooperation among Swedish and Danish authorities. He praised DALO’s proactive and solution-oriented approach, which significantly reduced the time required to initiate air surveillance operations and enable drone detection.
The Giraffe 1X radar boasts high-performance 3D capabilities and was deployed in a self-sufficient configuration known as the Compact Radar Module (CRM), making it ideally suited for urgent applications where operational infrastructure is limited. This versatility allows the unit to be relocated easily; for instance, it can be transferred from a pickup truck to a building or another vehicle.
Equipped to detect, track, and classify various air targets, including drones, the Giraffe 1X system can scan the entire airspace every second. It is capable of identifying fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, high-speed missiles, and RAM threats, as well as small UAVs operating in environments with significant clutter.
