FAA Awards L3Harris Airspace Surveillance Modernization Contract to Enhance Aircraft Tracking and Safety

MELBOURNE, Fla., July 1, 2026 – In a significant move to enhance air traffic safety and efficiency, L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has been awarded a contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to modernize and continue operating the nation’s aircraft tracking network until 2045. This modernization effort is critical for enabling air traffic controllers to effectively manage the evolving demands of airspace.

L3Harris will be upgrading over 700 ground stations that provide real-time, satellite-based flight positioning data to air traffic controllers across the nation. The enhancements will include advanced security measures to safeguard crucial airspace data, as well as expanded surveillance capabilities to track new entrants in the National Airspace System.

“L3Harris is advancing the FAA’s vision for modernization with a state-of-the-art surveillance infrastructure that will shape the future of our airspace system and enhance safety for every air traveler,” stated Kathy Crandall, President of Mission Networks, Space & Mission Systems at L3Harris. “By increasing network capacity, we’re ensuring that the United States maintains its position as a global leader in air traffic management.”

As the operator of the largest terrestrial air traffic surveillance network worldwide, L3Harris integrates thousands of data sources and provides vital information to hundreds of FAA and government facilities, operating through a 24/7 network operations center. This latest initiative builds on nearly two decades of reliable service and innovation, further extending L3Harris’ integral role in the FAA’s surveillance framework.
