Car doors have evolved significantly since the early 1900s from basic flaps with simple latches to complex systems designed to enhance safety and convenience. With the current demands for safer vehicle operation, the question arises: what standards should modern car doors meet?
A recent study by the German Insurers Accident Research (“Unfallforschung der Versicherer”, UVD) analyzed accidents involving cyclists in Saxony-Anhalt from 2012 to 2016. The research revealed that “dooring” incidents—where car doors open unexpectedly—accounted for 52% of accidents involving cyclists. Rheinmetall has responded to this issue with a promising solution.
Increased Safety and Convenience: Rheinmetall’s Compact Door Actuator
To meet raised safety standards, Rheinmetall has developed the Compact Door Actuator, which automates the operation of car doors. When integrated with safety systems and environmental monitoring, the actuator can unlock its full potential, enhancing safety in everyday situations. For example, if an occupant attempts to open a door while an obstacle, such as an oncoming bicycle or vehicle, is nearby, the system will prevent the door from opening. Additionally, when faced with heavy doors, the actuator provides assistance to passengers, particularly in scenarios when their hands are full, such as carrying shopping bags.
The Future Starts Today
According to Andreas Köster, the project manager overseeing the pre-development of this technology at Rheinmetall, advancements like the Compact Door Actuator are critical for the future of autonomous vehicles. Köster noted the design challenges, particularly the need for a compact yet powerful actuator that fits between the A-pillar and the door. He emphasized the importance of a motor that is not only strong enough to move average door weights of 30 to 40 kilograms but also operates quietly.
The innovative mounting design of the Rheinmetall Door Actuator, positioned in the hinge axis outside the car door, significantly enhances passenger convenience by offering an almost limitless opening angle. This advancement aligns with the trend toward more user-friendly car doors in autonomous systems.
