NATO paves the way towards a Multinational A400M Fleet

Ankara, Türkiye – 07 July 2026 – During the recent NATO Summit Defence Forum, the governments of Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom announced the launch of a High Visibility Project aimed at establishing a multinational fleet of Airbus A400M military aircraft.

This initiative builds on the success of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) and seeks to enhance strategic airlift capabilities among European allies. It envisions the gradual development of a multinational A400M fleet that encompasses not only aircraft operations but also maintenance, training support, infrastructure, and procurement.

The overarching goal is to establish a comprehensive solution that aligns with national and NATO requirements, while simultaneously providing increased operational flexibility for missions such as air-to-air refuelling, disaster relief, medical evacuation, and firefighting.

“The selection of the A400M as the basis for this multinational fleet highlights its key strategic airlift capabilities. With over 135 aircraft currently in operation, and surpassing 270,000 flight hours across the global fleet, the A400M has been instrumental in bolstering air mobility for major European NATO nations. Its future capability roadmap promises to further underscore its significance for decades to come,” stated Ben Bridge, Chairman of Airbus Defence and Space in the UK.

This initiative draws inspiration from the existing success of the MMF, which has been operational since 2020 with the Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, widely recognized for its combat-proven capabilities.

The MMF program has established a unique arrangement that allows nations to operate NATO-owned Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft in a pooled setting, fostering commonality, cost-effectiveness, and interoperability across the Atlantic. It symbolizes a successful model of European defense cooperation.

Finland officially joins MMF

In tandem with the A400M announcements, NATO confirmed Finland’s official membership in the Multinational MRTT Fleet, further expanding the collaborative base of nations and reinforcing European sovereignty in essential defense capabilities.

The MMF program now includes nine participating nations: the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.

This initiative underscores the strong partnership among NATO, the participating countries, and industry stakeholders, particularly led by Airbus. The MMF exemplifies how nations can pool resources for continuous access to advanced capabilities, effectively addressing evolving security challenges through strategic cooperation.

Currently, with nine A330 MRTTs operational from a total order of 12 aircraft, the MMF has successfully deployed to NATO’s Eastern Flank, supported evacuation efforts in Afghanistan, and participated in international exercises throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
