RTX’s Raytheon completes design review of Landsat Next space instruments
Earth observation sensors will offer advanced and more frequent views of Earth
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., May 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Raytheon, a division of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has successfully completed the preliminary design review for NASA’s Landsat Next Instrument Suite (LandIS). This program includes multiple components provided by Raytheon, such as a multispectral imager, along with engineering analyses, algorithms, fabrication, testing, and support.
The design review confirmed the validity of the technical approach and engineering design for Raytheon’s instruments, algorithms, and imager. The multispectral imager aims to enhance performance significantly by more than doubling the current spatial resolution. As a superspectral device, it will capture twice the number of spectral bands, ensuring the highest quality data for users. This advanced capability will aid in various applications like assessing water quality, improving crop production, managing forests, and researching climate and snow dynamics.

Raytheon has been involved with the Landsat mission since the 1970s, having contributed to instruments for Landsat missions 2 through 7. The first LandIS sensor is anticipated to be delivered in 2028. The Landsat Next mission will maintain the longest-running satellite record of Earth’s land surface while significantly enhancing the availability and quality of actionable data.
