Contract strengthens U.S. and allied readiness against evolving ballistic missile threats
Tucson, Ariz., Aug. 10, 2026 — Raytheon, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, has been awarded a $745 million contract by the Missile Defense Agency for the production and sustainment of Standard Missile-3 Block IIA (SM-3 IIA) interceptors.
Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, emphasized the importance of the SM-3 Block IIA, stating, “This missile is a cornerstone of regional defense, providing the U.S. and its allied partners with greater reach, accuracy, and confidence against evolving threats.” She noted that ongoing investments in production lines and processes have enhanced capacity, allowing for quicker delivery of these critical munitions to customers.
The SM-3 IIA program is a collaborative effort between Japanese industry and Raytheon, featuring a larger rocket motor and an enhanced kinetic warhead compared to its predecessors. This advancement enables it to engage threats more rapidly and offers protection over larger areas from short- to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.
RTX has significantly invested in expanding its manufacturing capabilities, highlighted by a recent $115 million expansion of its Alabama missile integration facility, which will boost integration and delivery capacity by over 50%. Production under this contract will occur at Raytheon facilities located in Tucson, Ariz., and Huntsville, Ala.
