Canada takes next step towards future GlobalEye capability
Canada has reached an important milestone in its pursuit of advanced airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) capabilities by entering into a term-sheet agreement with Saab. This step follows the nation’s designation of Saab as the preferred supplier for its future AEW&C needs, announced on 27 May 2026. While this agreement does not represent a formal contract or commitment to purchase aircraft, it signifies progress made through collaboration between Saab, the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), setting a foundation for further negotiations.
Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, remarked, “The term-sheet agreement reflects the strong collaboration between Saab and Canada and establishes a clear framework for the next phase of our engagement. With a well-defined scope in place, we are well positioned to continue discussions and demonstrate how Saab’s proven and highly capable AEW&C solution can meet Canada’s requirements.”
Under this proposed program, Canada plans to procure six GlobalEye aircraft, along with associated systems, training, and support. Future discussions will center on configuring the system to meet Canada’s specific operational needs while also considering aspects like industrial participation, capability development, and program execution.
Saab has expressed its commitment to aiding Canada in achieving its defense and security objectives, enhancing interoperability with allied nations, and providing proven capabilities to address evolving operational demands.
The GlobalEye system represents a cutting-edge AEW&C solution, equipped with a suite of both active and passive sensors designed for long-range detection and identification of incoming threats across multiple domains. By offering real-time information to military commanders, GlobalEye significantly enhances situational awareness and facilitates the early identification of potential threats.
