
L3Harris Delivers SLS Core Stage Engines for Artemis III Mission
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., July 22, 2026 — L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has successfully delivered four RS-25 engines designated to power the core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, essential for the upcoming Artemis III mission scheduled for launch in 2027.
Kristin Houston, President of Space Propulsion & Power Systems at L3Harris, stated, “This is a major milestone in our effort to return astronauts to the lunar surface. This delivery keeps Artemis III on track for launch in 2027 and supports NASA’s transition to an annual launch cadence that will enable regular missions to the Moon.”
Artemis III marks the third flight of the SLS and will facilitate integrated operations between the Orion spacecraft and one or both commercial lunar landers in low Earth orbit. This mission will also represent the first occasion where technicians will integrate the engines with the core stage while it is positioned vertically, a change that aims to simplify and expedite the installation process while enhancing access to each engine.
The four RS-25 engines delivered for Artemis III have a storied history, having previously supported 36 space shuttle flights, which included assembly missions for the International Space Station and the historic return to space of Project Mercury astronaut and former Senator John Glenn.
L3Harris has undertaken significant upgrades on these engines for the initial four Artemis missions, enhancing them with modern electronics and new insulation designed to withstand the harsh thermal conditions of the SLS. The upgraded engines are also set to operate at higher thrust levels compared to their performance during the space shuttle era.
Future Artemis missions will incorporate newly manufactured engines that utilize modern production techniques and improvements aimed at reducing costs while ensuring high performance and reliability.
